Seeking character artists

I'm looking for artists who can model real-time animated characters and first-person view weapons for paid work. You must have a portfolio of existing work you have done in the past.

My job is to make tools you love, with the features you want, and performance you can't live without.

Did you have a guy that didn't work out? I was secretly hoping that we were gonna see a character set released soon.

It's difficult to negotiate right now because 30% goes to Valve and I offer a relatively low percentage of sales. My goal is to sell game-ready items with physics, scripts, sound, etc., at a price low enough that everyone just buys them right away. I did get the rights to a large collection of environment model packs, but characters are more difficult to obtain.

This is an interesting study in "bottleneck avoidance"...a term I just made up where you know what the limiting step on your game is, and you avoid it and go off on some irrelevant tangent, i.e. you have no enemies to fight, don't know how to obtain them, so you decide to go paint 50 textures of walls so you can feel like you are moving forward. You finish that, and you're still no closer to solving a really hard problem. Well, I am responsible for coming up with this stuff and it's really difficult to obtain content. Other than the FPSC stuff, which aren't event that great, I don't think there is a large volume of consistent character packs anywhere on the web.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do. The upside is we get unique content that becomes Leadwerks IP. Even if it's sold at a loss for now, it still adds value to the software and will increase sales and the quality of the community's output.

Email or message me if you want to trade your license for a Steam key. You'll want to opt in to the Steam beta (not the Leadwerks beta) when you install.

That may be true, but I also think in the long run, if you look at what Unity was able to do, you'll see that a large share of their business comes from their asset store. If you give asset developers more of a cut of the profit initially than Unity does, it might actually be beneficial financially for Leadwerks. I know you already have connections with Arteria3D, and a bunch of other sellers go on the promotions forum, so that might not be a bad place to start if you tried this.

What's funny is a lot of the really skilled artists are actually too detailed...their characters just have way too much intricate stuff going on in their costume, to the point where it creates so much visual incongruity with anything not modeled the exact same way. So ideally you want someone more towards the middle of the skill curve.

.their characters just have way too much intricate stuff going on in their costume,

This is essential for Third person games or cut scenes or the hero character model, like last Tomb Raider game, you can still resize textures with any painting program.

There is such a thing as too much art. There are otherwise great artists who would make incredible characters but they bury them in 15 belts (crisscrossed all over the place), 20 pouches, 80 daggers, 30 boot straps, etc. etc. Then there are others who put lens flares and god rays and other filters in everything and it makes otherwise good images look tacky. It's definitely a balance between simple elegance and pronounced character but it's easier to overdo it than under.

Yeah, I mean stuff like this, where it's like more detailed than anything in reality that has ever existed. All those little pieces would break off his costume the first time the poor guy tried to put on his shoes.

It's interesting that the more detail you have, the more opportunities there are for visual incongruence. This character would look completely out of place next to any characters that wasn't modeled with the exact same level of detail and style.

Yeps, that's why entire character packs (done by the same artist) are much better. My plan is to do such pack(s), but unfortunaly, finding the time to do them is not easy. Whenever i do have some spare time (besides projects and work), i am working on art for Leadwerks, though. smile.png
