  1. I'm still not sure why you are giving up BlitzMax for C++, as you are productive enough in it, to be a threat to the bigger engine makers. :)

If it is for cross platform compatibility, I guess it is a good enough reason. If it is for something else, I don't get it.

  2. Rick,

The idea with VC, is it is purely to make money quickly, using any means necessary.

So if you go to these people, its because you want their money and management expertise, so you/they can sell for a huge profit within 5 years or so.

As Josh indicated, if he takes money from these guys, he will be giving them control of his company. That's fine if you are just in it for money, but if you enjoy what you do, then giving it up, is a high price to pay.

I have relatives who went down the VC route and while they don't regret it, they are bored to tears now, because they don't have a company to play with.

Have a look through the Venture Capital entry at Wiki. The history of it is very interesting.

  3. You'll never get rid of people's desire to have something tangible, otherwise we'd all be sitting in empty rooms. :)

Case in point, some of my most prized possessions, are my favorite games in mint condition boxes, from more than 10 years ago. In those days for a standard price, they made awesome manuals, cloth maps and sometimes put little toys in the boxes. It was all part of the gaming experience. Now days, you have to pay up to $200 for those extras.

    Fallout Box 2

Hardcore fans love this stuff and will pay through the nose for it and the big devs know it.

I do understand what you guys are saying though and while they may let people rent/buy games once the sales have tailed off, I don't think they will ever sell new games at those prices, for the reasons I posted above.

  4. I can only assume that it's the game companies who wouldn't allow the $50/mo play everything idea. Most likely old school executives reluctant to move away from their model of needing to get $50 per copy.

The problem is once they drop the price in one place, then people will demand it everywhere and the bottom will fall out of the market. Then it would be no longer be profitable to sell in the real world.

Speaking for myself, I'd rather have less customers paying more, than more customers paying less, because support costs per customer, are the same.

Long-term recurring revenue streams are much better. Developers could spend their time adding new levels and features to an existing game, instead of going back to the drawing board every two years they don't go bankrupt.

A truly crafty developer, would find a way to let their customers improve their games, while paying the developer for the privilege of doing so. In fact some communities have a better understanding of what makes a game a classic, than most devs do. emo-emot-smug.gif

  5. >Is that how it works?

Since Rick isn't around I'll answer.

Yes and many more components than you mention. The idea is each entity has a list of components and it iterates through them one at a time, during its update cycle.

  6. Why is this all of a sudden a good idea? When I posted this on the forum, everyone attacked me like it was a dumb idea...including you Josh. Oh well...better late than never.

Go back and read your own posts. Its the way you proposed things that got peoples hackles up.

At one point you said, if X doesn't happen you would move on. You also made the sweeping generalization, "I personally believe the days of corridor shooters is drawing to a close". That seemed to be implying that games won't be good, unless they have the feature you want. So in actuality, these "attacks" made on you, were responses to the "attacks" you were making on the engine and games the community would make with it.

So as another poster suggested, you need to learn the art of diplomacy, or you will suffer from "persecution" for the rest of your life. :D

  7. Thanks for the good wishes Pixel Perfect. ;)

I just got all the bits for my computer at long last and except for not being sure which are the 'earth' wires for the front panel lights and buttons, it is ready to be switched on for the first time!
