If you use the near culling range for all those little interior props the engine will cull them very efficiently. The renderer won't even loop through them. This is a technique I implemented to make the Zone scene run in real-time.

Wrong thread, but yeah the view range is something we are looking at. However the near one is too near for our camera zoom so medium is required, which is still fine. This is why it would be pretty cool if we could define these like I believe we were able to do in LE 2, but I don't think it'll be a huge issue to use Medium with a top/down camera.
