Nvidia drivers no longer work with Ubuntu?

I'm getting worried now.

Installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu and selecting Nvidia driver 384 and then restarting leads to a black screen when the system restarts.

Installing a the OS again and selecting driver 345 also has the same result.

Are Nvidia proprietary drivers no longer compatible with Ubuntu?

My job is to make tools you love, with the features you want, and performance you can't live without.
