Preview of Material Needed for Painting

When painting materials on brushes or for terrain, when you go to select a material, you get a 'open file' window that cannot show you what the material looks like. All the end-user can do is read the name of the material. As an artist, I am very visual. I need to see the material to determine if it's going to work with what I have in mind. I'd really like it when selecting a material for painting, whether for painting on a brush or terrain or anywhere else where I'd need to select a material, I'd get some kind of preview and not just names to read.
