It would be handy for me to have the ability to load .smd files directly into LE. Has anyone written an importer? There used to be one at some point in the development of LE.

Why would you need .smd support?

For testing, and your own use, it's not much of an issue, but for anything that gets finished, using other people's smd files could get you in a fair bit of trouble. You can always convert your own media onto the gmf format

I can't be bothered with the conversion process - too much of my time is spent converting things.

I've just checked and Leadwerks Engine SDK 1.10 had .smd support - as well as .b3d.

It would be great to have smd support back.

You can use UU3D Pro to convert any format to gmf.

There's really not many tools a game developer needs, and they're not expensive if you didn't spend your money on useless stuff:

1) Leadwerks Engine 2.3 (150€)

2) Ultimate Unwrap 3D Pro (44€)

3) 3D World Studio 5.52 (37€)

4) Blender (0€)

5) Gimp (0€)

6) Paint.NET (0€)

7) Visual Studio 2008 C++ (0€) and/or Lua (0€)

So for a total of 231€ you have all tools you need for even AAA game development.

I think I can safely say their will be no native support for anything other than .gmf as support for the previously supported file formats was phased out some time ago. So I'd get used to having to use a format that can be converted.

If its the Half Life SMD format that you're refering to then I think Ultimate Unwrap 3D Pro has an importer for that so you could convert it to gmf format using that.

btw ... 'I can't be bothered' is not going to get you very far when trying to create a game :)
