More generally, I think the problem is that the existing instances of models placed in the scene are not being reloaded when the source model file is modified...

I am working on this now. It's very complicated and tricky to do something like this because if the model hierarchy changes at all the entire structure you have loaded into the scene is no longer valid. There's not a perfect answer for every possible scenario, but I am trying to implement what will work best most of the time...

The underlying problem is solved. Saving a model will now result in each instance of the model in the scene reloading.
