Meaning the viewport is linked to a camera that is placed in the map?

Should the viewport controls change the position and orientation of the camera object?

Let's build cool stuff and have fun. :)

Yes - the CAMERA viewport is linked to the camera(s) placed on the map -

The default CAMERA view - would be exactly what the 'Run Game'  view produces.

The camera is not linked to the viewport but rather is an independent  'object' -

If the 'camera object ' is rotated  - the CAMERA viewport rotates - yet the models retain their position 'in space' as well as in the other viewports.
